PLAYER DATE I & II

A quality, American-made drum set at a player's price point, with a vintage-inspired sound developed with Joey Waronker (Roger Waters, Beck, Atoms for Peace).

Two shells, one family. Player Date I is all mahogany: full-bodied, dark and round, with enhanced low end and a clear, defined note. Player Date II adds maple to the inner and outer plies for a warm tone that's slightly brighter, with more mid-range and a smooth, even attack.

The build

Bearing edgesBread and Butter on the bass drums. Full Contact on the toms. Both on the snare.

Every edge is cut and sanded by hand in Gladstone. The edge is possibly the biggest single influence on a drum's tone. Bread and Butter, C&C's own cut, gives the bass drums a full, open, resonant voice. Full Contact on the toms gives a clear, defined note. The snare uses Full Contact on the batter side and Bread and Butter on the resonant side.

ShellsSeven plies, made in-house. All mahogany on I; maple, mahogany, maple on II.

C&C has made its own shells since 2010. Each ply is inspected before it's glued and bent in the moulds. Player Date I is 7-ply mahogany, 8mm throughout, with a wide tuning range and controlled decay. Player Date II puts maple on the inner and outer plies of a 7-ply mahogany core: 8.5mm on toms and snares, 10mm on bass drums.

Player Date I & III is darker, with more low end. II is a touch brighter, with more mid-range.

Player Date I is super warm, with a rounded attack and enhanced low end, and it's at home in extremely low tunings. Player Date II brings the same vintage-inspired sound a touch brighter, with a pronounced mid-range and a smooth attack. It suits situations that need volume and projection, yet it's very much at home in the smaller sizes that hark back to when bop ruled the jazz scene.

FinishesEighteen finishes across stain and natural, sparkle and pearl wraps, and glass glitter.

Every drum is hand sanded and finished in Gladstone. Stains come in satin or vintage gloss. Most finishes are offered on both shells; a few stains suit one wood only.

HardwareCentred double-ended Deco lugs, 2.3mm triple-flanged hoops, vintage fold-out spurs.

C&C's Deco lugs are die-cast steel, plated in high-quality chrome, and sit centred on the shell. The hoops are 2.3mm triple-flanged steel. Bass drums get vintage fold-out spurs and butterfly claws. Snares get the Deluxe Classic strainer. Wrapped bass drums come with Ebony Gloss wood hoops and a wrap-matching inlay, natural-finish bass drums get hoops matched to the shell.
